Definition:
Rational use of drugs means the right drug for
the right patient at the right dose at the right time and it's the right route and
should be economical as well. According to WHO rational use of drug means: That
patients received appropriate medication to their clinical needs and doses that
meet their individual requirement for an adequate period and the lowest
cost to them and their community. Approaches to achieving rational use of drugs:
According to the above definition, rational drug therapy can be achieved by applying
the following approach: 1. Patient problem
Try to find an explanation for the patient's problem. Take a
detailed history of the illness and drug history of the patient.
2. Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is done by past medical history. Pass medical therapy present
complaint if the patient is not diagnosed properly, then this is called irrational
therapy an accurate diagnosis is a very important for rational therapy, around
diagnosing is made then how rational therapy is possible
3. Therapeutic objectives:
This should be done by relieving
the symptoms, preventing disease or combination of both
4. Select the Treatment:
This approach towards the selection of treatment is divided into two
phases,
A. Determine the option available to treat the health problem sometime
simple advice can work no drug treatment is required. But if a drug is
needed, then select the drug group used in treatment.
B. Evaluate the drug based on the following criteria
- Efficacy
- Safety
- Suitability
- Cost-effectiveness
- East of administration
- Storage of requirements
5.Start The Treatment:
- The drugs should be prescribed and start the drug administration.
- Inform the patient about the beneficial effect as well as the side effect of the drug.
- Instruct the patient on how to deal with side effects.
The patient should be given a date of next appointment so
that result of treatment should be assessed.
6. Result Of Treatment:
The result
of drug therapy should be assessed so the conclusion can be drawn about the
effect of the drug if the patient response then it is rational therapy NF
therapy does not respond so then start from Step 1. 7. Conclusion of treatment:
Determine if the therapeutic goal has been achieved or not? Has the treatment
solved the problem or not? If not reached the diagnosis made or the compliance
of the patient. All of the above steps required skills that the rational use of the drug is achieved.
